San Diego Central Jail Custody Role

San Diego Central Jail is operated by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office at the center of the county jail system. The Sheriff identifies it as the primary point of intake for incarcerated males in San Diego County. The custody mix is not just new arrests. The official facility profile also names special-handling people, newly booked people awaiting transfer, pre-arraignment defendants, self-represented defendants, people in high-publicity trials, and people with serious medical or psychiatric needs.

The building opened in May 1998 and the Sheriff describes a high-rise jail with 417,000 square feet, 11 floors, 17 total levels when mezzanines and basement areas are counted, and a Central Command Center for electronic jail operations. Those physical facts matter for family members because the jail is both an intake point and a medical or mental-health housing site. The Sheriff's page says the facility provides dialysis, infectious disease control, dental care, physicians, psychiatrists, dentists, nurses, and clinical social workers. It also states that the Psychiatric Stabilization Unit is the largest acute psychiatric treatment facility in San Diego County.

The Sheriff facility page emphasizes San Diego Central Jail's role, size, and medical mission. The capacity figure comes from the Board of State and Community Corrections rated-capacity workbook, which lists 940 rated beds for San Diego Central Jail as of April 24, 2026. The same research set shows that San Diego County's seven Sheriff detention facilities had 6,133 rated beds in that BSCC workbook, while the Sheriff reported average daily care of 3,892 incarcerated persons in 2024 and an approximate jail-system average daily population of 4,400 in an October 29, 2025 statement.

San Diego Central Jail Visits

County social visits must be scheduled in advance. The Sheriff research notes that reservations can generally be made by calling (619) 409-5000 Wednesday through Sunday, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and that the eVisit System may be reached through the Who's In Jail website. Social visits are 30 minutes. A maximum of three visitors may attend, including children. Visitors who are 18 or older need valid identification, and minors must be with a parent, court-appointed guardian, or another adult with legal custody.

Visits can be changed or canceled for discipline, transfer, security, or health reasons. People on probation or parole must request authorization before scheduling. Anyone traveling to the downtown jail should confirm the appointment and parking or entry instructions before leaving.

San Diego Central Jail Mail and Money

Mail for people in Sheriff custody is routed through the county jail mail processing center, not directly to San Diego Central Jail. Since September 1, 2022, mail sent directly to six detention facilities is rejected or returned. The envelope or package must include the incarcerated person's name, booking number, facility, sender name, and return address. The booking number comes from Who's In Jail, which is why the roster search is often needed before sending a letter.

San Diego Central Jail Booking

The Sheriff intake flow begins with a photograph, booking number, and pat-down search. The person goes through visual and verbal temperament screening, medical screening by a Sheriff nurse, and vital-sign clearance. If vital signs do not clear, the person must be medically evaluated or cleared before booking continues. If self-harm risk or designated safety criteria are present, the process can include risk-level review by a Sheriff nurse or qualified mental-health professional.

After initial screening, property is removed and handled, a Detentions Processing Technician may pre-book the person if medically cleared, and wristbanding is used for identification. Live Scan fingerprints, phone access, classification, and housing assignment follow. A person who is not fit for jail may be taken by the arresting officer to a hospital or County Psychiatric Hospital for treatment or clearance. San Diego Central Jail Notes

San Diego Central Jail is easy to confuse with nearby federal custody because MCC San Diego is also downtown. The Sheriff jail is for San Diego County custody. BOP custody, CDCR prison custody, and ICE detention use different agencies and locators. The distinction matters when a person disappears from the Sheriff roster after sentencing, transfer, federal hold movement, or release.
